A couple weeks ago I found out that the amazing and uplifting book that I read, Underestimated, An Autism Miracle by JB Handley and Jamie Handley was turned into a MOVIE!!!!!! It's a documentary about Jamie and other spellers who have worked with DM in San Diego.
This weekend coming up, the movie is debuting at the Phoenix Film Festival with multiple showings April 1 - 2nd. If you live in Phoenix, you can be a part of the ACTION!!! There are multiple activities going on with the film festival and it all sounds like a lot of fun. Don't be sad if you can't be in Phoenix this weekend, because the production company of the movie is allowing parents and practitioners to HOST the movie in our own areas after April 20th. This is AMAZING news for Found My Voice, Inc as we are opening in May. We are HOSTING a showing of the movie on Wednesday, May 10th 2023 at 7pm. Classic Cinema Kendall 11 95 Fifth Street Oswego, IL 60543 Tickets for the event are FREE, but you MUST register for a ticket prior to the movie. The theater is NOT selling tickets - you can only get the tickets online, but again they are FREE. Click here for tickets: https://kinema.com/events/spellers-weewek The concession stand will be open too! (Disclaimer - Found My Voice, Inc is paying for the movie theater rental and movie tickets for all attendees and we are not profiting from concession sales, but we would like you to support the movie theater!) If we have enough interest, we will be holding another showing of the movie in June 2023 as well. I really truly believe in this cause and I know that after working with so many non-speakers in a school setting that these children, young adults and adults deserve better. SO MUCH BETTER than what they are getting from their typical educational settings. No person or institution has the right to tell you how to communicate and what is best for you. Spelling to communicate works! (www.I-ASC.org has documentation available for you on their website) Speakers should want better for non-speakers as well. Everyone deserves to be able to communicate in whatever method works for them. For some it is ASL or an iPad and NOW we are going to show the world that SPELLERS deserve the same respect. This is HUGE and I hope you want to be a part of this amazing movement. I feel blessed and grateful to the families that want better for their children. The world needs acceptance and more understanding for those with neurodivergences (thinking differently). Non-speakers do not have a choice to not speak - they have a brain body disconnect called apraxia that is not allowing them to speak. It's not their fault that they cannot speak, but they ARE intelligent and they do have wants and needs like EVERYONE ELSE. Be kind.....everyone is going through SOMETHING whether you know it or not. May 10th at 7pm SPELLERS Movie: https://kinema.com/events/spellers-weewek I hope to see you there! Please feel free to message or email me with any questions. [email protected] Hello Fellow Neurodivergents and those in the Disability Community!
This is my first blog post and I am so excited to take you along on this journey with me. A few years ago, my husband bought me a book on autism. I'm an avid reader and I looked forward to reading it when I got some free time. It took a little bit of time before I got to the book, but I finally did. The book was so amazing that I read it in one afternoon. At times I was laughing as well as crying, but the entire time I was mesmerized. Completely mesmerized at something I already knew in my soul, but I could not prove. At this time in my life, I was working as a Special Education Teacher for students with multiple disabilities. I knew that my students had more capable skills than what they were given credit for by most school staff. This book was the proof I needed and then I began to investigate and look into more details on this subject. The book lead me to the I-ASC website ( www.i-asc.org ) and I signed for the Spelling to Communicate (also known as S2C) Practitioner in Trainer programming as quickly as I was able to do so. Between the book and the S2C training, I finally found my calling in life.........I have never felt so included or seen in all my life. I have met some of the best people that I am now proud to call my friends and colleagues. We are all working together to help the Neurodivergent and non-speaking members of our society have a better and more fulfilled life. Communication - in whatever form - is a HUMAN RIGHT! Not everyone is capable of ASL, the use of an electronic ACC device, typing or writing........S2C fulfills a unique niche in the non-speaking world and I am proud to be a part of the world we call the Spellerverse. I am the 2nd trained S2C Practitioner in Illinois and I am part of an even bigger organization that supports all non-speakers ( www.i-asc.org ) as well as 2 other amazing women whom have their own S2C practices. Found My Voice will be opening in late May/early June 2023 and we are already taking appointments. Our Grand Opening will be held sometime in June 2023 and we hope that we have representation from all members and ages within the disability community. Found My Voice will have S2C, tutoring (I'm still a Licensed SPED teacher and I'm keeping my license active), educational parent events, social events, play skills training for our younger community members with delays, plus arts and crafts. I want Found My Voice to be a safe place for everyone in the disability community. No gaslighting. No masking. No stares. No negative comments. All are truly welcome at Found My Voice and I want those currently without a voice to be HEARD and RESPECTED. Speech does NOT equal intelligence!!! Post a comment with your email address if you want a link for the book that made a difference in my life and I hope it will make a difference in yours as well! |
